Bataille d'Ussel

The ennemy reacts as violently as ever ; as a testimony of it the resistants captured are shot on the spot.

These events compel the Germans to withdraw to Clermont-Ferrand leaving a garrison at Ussel and Egletons.

The convoy will be attacked at le Chavanon.

Jesser is now aware that what he doubted of, is a certainty : Resistance is obviously here and its silence was but a cunning tactics when he passed along before.

Besides, the maquisards are now to fight openly, strengthened by a paratroop French unit coming from England and dropped near Bonnefonds on August 10th 1944.

A German combat command coming from Tulle is ceaselessly attacked up to Egletons where it must shut itself in the Ecole Nationale Professionnelle (National Technical high school) in early August. At every attempt to get out it is tackled by the maquis. From August 14th , it is surrounded and attacked violently.

The garrison of Ussel has turned the EPS into an entrenched camp. Every patrol falls into an ambush.

The encircling is total. The fight starts on August 16th at half past nine A.M. Confronted with an intense firing, the EPS on fire, surrenders without any condition on 17th in the morning.
