Panneau de la Légion

Here is the Corrèze higher country, its woody parts, its plateaus « cut sharp » by valleys all the deeper as they get near their joining the Dordogne.

It’s a page of its history which is told to you.

June 1940 - the France headed by Marshal Pétain surrenders- its government withdrawn at Vichy agrees with collaborating with the enemy ; another France shrinks from it.

Composed and already organised action as this of the Copernic then Alliance networks born for the services of inquiries, behaviour of men alone, being long to gather and get organized, hiding-places being spotted for people hunted by Vichy, carrying out operations of sabotage, making collaborators uneasy.

This action will start as early as September 1941 at Ussel, Neuvic, St Exupery whose airdrome so-called Thalamy will allow four departures for London ; it will go on in the other cantons next year and hence, according to the men and to manage with the Vichy pressure.

As a matter of fact, where is the enemy ?

Higher-Corrèze is not occupied by German troops. The enemy is the goverment of Vichy, its armed forces, its police and , later on, its milice. Its props : town-councils, either because the mayors favour it, or because after dismissal of mayors reticent or hostile, commissaries or special delegation are appointed.
